Northumberland celebrates Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Northumberland communities pulled out all the stops to celebrate the historic occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee as towns and villages became a blaze of red, white and blue.

A gallery of photos has been compiled to give residents a snapshot of all the celebrations across the county – this can be viewed at https://nland.cc/PJphotos

To kick off the extended Bank Holiday weekend of celebrations Jubilee Beacons were lit across the country including in communities along the length of Hadrian’s Wall - which made the national TV.

There were street parties, parades, church services, tree planting schemes and much more with schools, businesses and communities all getting involved in their own special way.

At the beginning of the year the county council launched a £70k Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Fund offering small grants to help communities with the cost of celebrating the event.

Dozens of communities right across Northumberland applied for it and almost 200 grants were awarded for a wide range of activities including street entertainment, contributing towards a Jubilee Beacon, hospitality or long-lasting commemorative schemes and planting projects.

Leader of Northumberland County Council, Glen Sanderson said: “The atmosphere over the Jubilee weekend has been terrific with communities and all generations coming together to celebrate the Queen’s reign and make some treasured memories.

“As always Northumberland communities pulled out all the stops to celebrate this historic occasion for our country.

“We have been bowled over by the response to the Jubilee fund we set up and so pleased that we have been able to support so many groups and communities to play their part in creating a very special county-wide celebration.

“After the tough times and all the restrictions at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, this celebration with friends, neighbours and loved-ones has been all the more special.”
